Abstract
The church of the fromer Monastery of semlacul Mic of the Gataia commune (Timis county), known from the beginning of the last century under the name of Saraca, was built, according to the archaeological research carried out in 1973 and to the data supplied by the documentary sources, towards the end of the XIV-th century, around the year 1400. Having a free-armed cross structure, the monument of Semlacul Mic distinguishes itself within the old Romanian wall architecture by the nave covered by a cupola supported by four masonry pillars and placed in the centre of the architectural volume, as well as by the pronaos divided into three transversal bays of which the median one is of ampler size. The analogies established with South Eastern European monuments as well as with two Romanian monuments of Suceava and Lipova confirm both the dating and the particularly interesting elements that characterize the church of Saraca. The recent protection and the restoration undergone by this monument prove the care and attention paid today in Romania to the art and architecture works created by our presecessors.
