Reintegrating parchment manuscripts that have been biologically damaged in a very complicated task. Although there are several possible repair methods, none is suitable for severely damaged leaves. In 1983 experiments on using manual casting as a possible repair method were begun in the Hungarian National Library. The aims were to fill in lacunae, on the extremely weak manuscripts, consolidate the parchment generally, and fix inks and pigments. The most appropriate pulp composition parchment was found to be parchment powder and cellulose fibres, and was chosen on physical examination, aesthetic considerations, and case of casting.
