The restoration of a blue gown and petticoat is described. Particularly valuable as it had not been extensively altered,unlike many garments of the period, it is thought have been made in England, c. 1780, from silk brocade with silver metallic threads woven in France c. 1720. On analysis the dye was found to have been an indigo-type. Although dirty, the fabric was relatively sound. Old repairs were removed and, after testing, the garment was washed (WA paste, neutral anionic detergent). A compatible silk fabric, dyed to match, was used for repairs. For display, a mannqquin torso was constructed to the normal 18th century shape with a linen chemise with hip panniers. Undersleeves and fichu (missing) were reconstructed from fine cotton voile.
