The author reports on a survey on damage caused by tourists in four of the most heavily visited monuments in England (St. Paul's and Canterbury Cathedrals Westminster Abbey and St. George's Chapel, Windsor,) urges more control of damage and pollution by visitors and refers to experiments in the use of silanes to harden the surface of Ledger stones controls to divert the crowds from sensitive areas, mats to clean shoes of grit, etc. Icomos UK has recently set up a committee on cultural tourism, which attempt to monitor damage to a number of sites in order to quantity the problem, and to put forward some solutions.
