Infrared reflectography-used to examine a number of panels attributed to the 16th century Dutch artist, Jan van Scorel, and his shop-revealed certain aspects of this artist's workshop procedure: 1) the relationship of a preparatory drawing to the underdrawing and paint layer(s) of the final version of the Stoning of Stephen (Musée Douai); 2) the amount of collaboration involved in the finding of the True Cross triptych (Grote Kerk, Breda), in the Crucifixion triptych (Archiepiscopal Museum, Utrecht) and in the altarpieces painted for the abbey of Marchiennes, now in the museum in Douai; 3) the identification of an atelier assistant (the so-called Good Samaritan Master); 4) the relationship of independent drawings attributed to Scorel and the underdrawings of the workshop altarpieces; and 5) the relationship of several workshop copies to each other or to a common model.
