Abstract
The paper describes the deficiencies of the sodium sulfate crystallization test and of investigations of pore size distribution when these tests are performed on samples of stone to which preservative treatments have been applied. The importance of identifying the mechanism of stone decay before attempting to evaluate a treatment is emphasized. Tests are described which are intended to make a direct assessment of the degree of consolidation and of a treatment's effectiveness in immobilizine salts.
