A group of eleven provincial Roman enamels was brought to the Conservation Center at New York University from the Ackland Museum in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for examination and treatment. A literature search provided the historical context for the pieces and technical information with regard to the composition of the bronze substrates and the glass. Macroscopic and microscopic visual examination was the basis of the discussion of methods of manufacture. The conclusions included the following points: the Ackland pieces are champleve enamels; all the bronze substrates except one were cast and cold working was noted on the majority; the glass was applied to the substrates both as solid inlays and as ground glass frits; red frit was also used as an adhesive for solid inlays; and some of the red glass observed appears to have been produced accidentally as a result of copper contamination.
