Protection of property is the common goal of both preservation activity and building and fire codes; thus, integrating these codes in restoration or conservation should be of paramount concern. Preservation, however, focuses its activity upon distinct architectural features. Too often building and fire codes are considered obstacles to the goals of historic preservation. The author's aim is to argue that these goals are compatible and that their successful integration depends on a better understanding of the various parties involved and an increase in the quality of communication. In order to develop solutions acceptable to all affected parties, it is important to understand the following: the intent of the code, how codes treat historic buildings, the constraints of the code official, use variance and appeal boards, preservation priorities, and effective communication.
