Abstract
This paper presents findings from the technical analysis of corrosion products from five copper alloy fibulae fragments excavated at the archaeological site of Kaman- Kalehöyük, Turkey. Compositional information was obtained using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), followed by identification of major and minor crystalline phases in the mineral samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results to date indicate that, as expected, chloride-containing mineral species, including those commonly referred to as bronze disease, are present within the corrosion crusts. The presence of sulfur and phosphorus species in the samples is also indicated. While the analyses provide identification of some interesting sulfur-containing minerals, phosphate minerals are not identified with certainty. Results also establish the presence of various silicates and/or silicon dioxide within the corrosion crusts; the copper silicate, chrysocolla, is tentatively identified in a few instances.
