The author (restorer) describes the restoration and conservation of the 14th-century manuscript of Jami' al-Tawanikh by Rashid al-Din. The manuscript itself being in good condition, the problems come mainly from the work of later bookbinders and repairers. Great areas of poor quality blue-tinted paper had been applied, using acidic paste. Another source of damage was the method of sewing, when the manuscript was rebound in the nineteenth century; in this way, the book had been reduced to single leaves by trimming all round. Old repairs were removed by using a Solomon's Steam Generator. New repairs were made with Japanese papers toned with Dylon Cold Water dye. Soft areas were resized with hydroxypropyl cellulose in alcohol. The pigments were examined in detail: burning blue pigment, lapis lazuli plus traces of azunite and malachite, non-burning blue-green, indigo, orpiment, bright red, vermilion, brown red. When the repair of the folios is complete, each page will be mounted in acid-free double-sided mounts so that it will be possible to exhibit many more of the miniatures at the same time.
