The different types of man-made fibers which predominate currently in apparel and home furnishings are reviewed and problems to be faced in preserving them discussed. The influence of environmental factors on the properties of man-made fibers are examined and comparisons are drawn between their stability and that of natural fibers. Methods are surveyed for the identification, or estimation, of damage to man-made fibers that may have occurred during use. Precautions that need to be taken in the cleaning and display of fabrics are indicated. See also AATA 15-389.
