The ancient brick Church of All Saints at East Horndon was declared redundant in 1970. The most valuable items were removed to other churches, and one item to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The church has recently been restored and the valuable limestone slab monuments to Sir John Tyrell and his wife Lady Alice Tyrell (died 1422) have been replaced. To help preserve the slabs, they have been mounted on a 26 inch chest with a damp course and air brick incorporated to ensure a free circulation of air to both sides of the stones. -- AATA
