The book was designed to provide more comprehensive and better organized information than had been available prior to its publication on the origin of silk, how it is treated to form thread, and how the thread is used in the manufacture of a wide variety of goods. Each chapter was written by a specialist. The processes of silk manufacture described are as follows: sericulture and reeling; throwing; spinning; weaving; knitting; and dyeing, printing, and finishing.
