Abstract
In the initial stages of sunlight degradation of polypropylene fibers, surface cracks are formed perpendicular to the fiber axis, with the core remaining undamaged. With further irradiation, the skin and core separate; the skin is eventually eroded away, to leave the core susceptible to degradation. It is believed that differential shrinkage between skin and core is responsible to a large degree for the phenomenon.
