The articles are grouped in the following sections: 1) Analysis, with two papers; 2) Painting, including an article about the microscopic study of the Shroud of Turin. Besides characterizing individual pigment particles, the article demonstrates the potential of polarized light microscopy. The author notes, Unfortunately, the chemical analytical use of the polarized light microscope was abandoned by nearly all chemists 30 years ago when electron optical instruments began to yield much better resolution ; 3) Preservation strategies, with one work on bronze, the other on wood conservation; 4) Metals, with seven contributions. The last of them, extending over 100 pages, describes a multidisciplinary research project concerning the detailed scientific examination of the Youth of Magdalensberg, a famous life-size bronze statue in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, believed to have been found in 1502 in Magdalensberg (Carinthia). Eight teams worked on the various aspects of the project: chemical and activation analysis, lead isotope dating, metallographic examination of the surface and of the core, trace analysis of the silicious casting core residues, metallographic analysis of the reinforcing iron wire and band of the core, and thermoluminescent dating of the remnants of the casting core. The result was surprising: the bronze in the museum is a 16th-century Renaissance copy of a now-lost original; 5) Paper, with two articles, one on the limitations of the conservation of paper; 6) One contribution on the chemical restoration of old photographs; and 7) Two articles on stone: one about conservation and deterioration problems of the unique sculptures found on the Easter Islands which are weathering (in the world's most isolated island and cleanest air) at an alarming degree, and the other about the mechanism of polymer migration in porous stone.
