The techniques used in the treatment of the Sistine Chapel are discussed, and brief mention is made of previous controversy about the current cleaning. Emphasis is placed on the reevaluation of Michelangelo as a colorist. Kathleen Weil-Garris Brandt, a professor at NYU, has been named a permanent consultant on the project. She has served as a liaison to the other art historians to keep them up-to-date on the progress of the treatment. She notes that the Flood area shows the work of a novice just adjusting to the fresco technique, while the rest of the chapel shows that Michelangelo soon became a master of the technique. The cleaning has allowed much more detailed examination of the artist's techniques and palette. The painter-restorer who treated the chapel in 1565 painted in losses in much darker colors. A dialogue is forming between art historians and scientists as a result of this project.
