X-ray diffraction and scanning-electron-microscope techniques were used to study ancient pottery techniques. Different manners of paint application and different procedures of firing are noted; different pigments, applied before and after firing, were found. Discusses the gradual migration of knowledge from the early oriental cultures to the west, which produced regional differences in painting techniques. -- AATA
