Abstract
Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) is described as a new method for the scientific study of works of art. First results of a research project, financed by the Stiftung Volkswagenwerk, show that it is possible to date oil-paintings painted within the last 100 years by DTA. The error is about ± 15 years. In combination with other methods it is also possible to identify organic materials used in fine arts.
