The Report considers the principles of publication and defines the functions of the excavation report, comparative discussions and interim reports. One chapter deals specifically with subsidiary data and its dissemination and storage. Specialist reports could be published in a new publication produced by the DoE. Custodians of finds should also undertake the custody and maintenance of the excavation record and be under an obligation to make unpublished material available. In the absence of local facilities, the excavation records should be housed by the National Monuments Record which should be strengthened to act as a center for the national archive. Computer methods of storing archaeological data are encouraged. Recommendations are made on the journals and means by which excavation reports are to be published. The involvement of the DoE in funding publications is urged. The roles of the Council for Bntish Archaeology, the Society for Medieval Archaeology, and the Royal Anthropological Institute, and national and local archaeological societies are outlined.
