This article describes the restoration of the structural stonework and the holding operation to statuary being carried out at Wells Cathedral. It also discusses previous Victorian restoration attempts. A description of the decay mechanisms in limestones in England is given. A new stone preservative material, Brethone, based on the alkoxysilanes is described, which has been used on one statue at Wells Cathedral. A description of another similar system used by staff of the Victoria and Albert Museum on two statues at Wells is also given.
