Molds are taken of smaller sculptures in cases where they are vulnerable to the environment, for security reasons, or similar motives. It is also done to make works of art more accessible to a larger public (i.e., Gothic keystones, various funerary monuments, etc.). Molds are also made of old seals, small reliefs, medals, and so on. Of late, use of silicon rubber has increased. It can be used at room temperature, which is a great advantage when molding older, painted works. It remains pliable and strong for several years, without losing its original shape, and it is possible to take many more molds with it than with plaster. Silicon rubber negatives record the finest details, to the point that there is almost no difference between the original and the copy; moreover, they do not shrink or stretch, as do gelatine negatives.
