The sizing of paper fibers and the mechanisms involved in the controlled deposition of hydrophobic material onto cellulose are examined. A number of modifications to the presently accepted sizing mechanism are proposed. Applications of the proposed modifications are developed, including the sizing of paper with rosin soap or rosin acid and alum.
