Abstract
The excavation of the workshop of Launay-Margat en Guipel (Ille-et-Vilaine) produced a little circular potter's kiln, accompanied by a very large number of sherds of typical Carolingian pottery. The excavation data and the analysis of the production are completed by the contribution of two dating methods: carbon-14 and archaeomagnetism. Both these techniques have dated the last firing of the kiln and confirm the appearance of the characteristic rims en bandeau as early as the beginning of the 10th century AD in Haute-Bretagne. The archaeomagnetism shows that the pots were fired upright, their bases resting directly on the sloping floor of the kiln. Petrography has characterized the production of this workshop, localized the origin of the raw materials, and completed the technological data.
