Petrographic and mortar analyses were conducted to determine the suitable temperature for refiring the tiles needed to restore the ceiling of Bethesda Terrace, the famed arcade (designed in 1868) in Central Park, New York City. The cast iron backer panels were tested for thickness and cracking and submitted to chemical analysis, metallurgical examination, rockwell hardness, and tensile tests. The clay tiles damaged beyond reuse need to be replaced. This work was proposed with a variety of materials, techniques, and finishes which were reviewed for either replication of the original tile or as substitute materials. Financing of the restoration of the encaustic tile ceiling at Bethesda Terrace has not yet been determined.
