Since very early times, bronze and brass have been used for making statues and artifacts. They have excellent casting properties and look beautiful either in their original color or after aging when these are said to have acquired a patina. The different kinds of patinas are explained. Deals with the various ways a patina can be faked to impart an antique look to an object and the ways in which this can be identified. When dangerous bronze disease occurs, it is preferable to arrest its growth and thin down incrustation, rather than totally remove it. Unfortunately, there is no scientific method for dating metallic objects. Genuine antique metal objects should never be overcleaned as it promotes fakes and replacement of originals with copies/casts which cannot be differentiated by ordinary visual means. Norms should be established by museums to avoid making casts of the same size such casts should be either smaller or bigger than the originals.
