Abstract
Marble decay in polluted atmosphere is described and illustrated with scanning electron micrographs. They allow study of the water repellent effect of protective coatings, the growth of gypsum crystals under a coating, and the increase of porosity due to cracks formed by stone work, particularly by bush hammer.
