This study explores the relationship between the dissemination of new information and the rate of scientific and technological progress as shown by the literature concerning the science and technology of hides and leather. The information is scattered in a very large number of documents. Major primary sources of information are considered, as well as the main abstracting and indexing services in the English language. Quantitative data are presented that provide a basis for evaluating the relative importance and utility of some of these sources.
