Abstract
At the World Tourism Organization (WTO) conference in Manila (1980) tourism was recognized as a phenomenon with social and cultural, as well as economic dimensions. The fact that it has put excessive pressure on some world heritage monuments and sites makes it necessary to better understand cultural tourism as an important phenomenon. Cohen's typology of tourist experiences (1979), based on a cognitive-normative dimension could be used as a global tool in so far as the individual's own evolution is studied quantitatively in a personal development perspective. The orientation of the new revised cultural tourism charter should be towards a better knowledge of the tourist in order to promote a type of cultural tourism which allows a dynamic policy for world heritage conservation and also to allow full expansion and development of each individual.
