The Threshold Limit Value (TLV) in work places for formaldehyde ranges from as low as 1 part per million in West Germany and Switzerland to 3 parts per million in the United States. To meet this limit, BTRA recommends using a DMDHEU type of resin along with a hard curing catalyst such as magnesium chloride; to critically control curing conditions, temperature, and time in order to achieve maximum effective reaction of the resin with the cellulose not to reuse the leftover finishing bath; to provide sufficient ventilation in finishing tenters and curing ovens to drive off the formaldehyde fumes released. To minimize the formaldehyde released from finished fabrics, BTRA recommends to add scavengers to the finishing bath, to spray the fabrics with formaldehyde acceptors, or to wash them.
