Abstract
X-ray diffraction analysis and neutron activation analysis were used to determine the mineralogy and some elemental concentrations in ceramic artifacts from the Predynastic site at Hierakonpolis in Upper Egypt. Clay and sediments from the area were also analyzed to determine the source of the clay. Mineral phase changes help bracket the temperatures that were used for firing the pottery.
