Materials used and tested by the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts are discussed. Gluten-based adhesives give better results for conservation of the paint layer than aqueous dispersions of synthetic resins. Synthetic resins are of greater use in relining, and are vital for the welding of cracks in canvas (using epoxies or acrylics). Polyacrylates or natural materials are used for fillings and other synthetic resins for retouching and varnishing.
