Only recently have products been developed specifically for the conservator, one such product being BEVA 371. The product used in this study was obtained from a licensed Swiss manu-facture. Wax had been most frequently used in the conservation treatment of paintings, but problems arose with the use of this material: high acidity, a high coefficient of light refraction, and a tendency to crystallize -- particularly within the damp, cool interior of churches. When BEVA 371 was tested in blind trials, no such effects were noted. BEVA 371 was used in the recent conservation treatments of three altar paintings from the 18th century, found in the church at Ostrowiec. A previous treatment in the 19th century had used flour paste. The treatment procedure is described.
