Abstract
Twenty-eight historic silk fabrics, dating from 1880 to 1980, were fractured by tensile stress. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the morphology of fractured fiber ends from each fabric. Fracture surfaces were interpreted in terms of interfibrillar cohesion, the presence of fiber surface flaws, and fiber ductibility/brittleness. -- AATA
