Abstract
This article is a survey of current conservation concerns in the areas of storage, exhibition, and transportation of collections. The factors of the physical environment of an object which affect its preservation are presented, and recommended levels or techniques for control are summarized. For a museum in a northern climate, a relative humidity of 40% in winter and 60% in summer is suggested in conjunction with temperatures ranging from 20/C in winter to 23/C in summer. Specific RH norms for eighteen types of collection materials are cited. Light levels of about 100 lux are suggested for sensitive materials. The need for systems to filter atmospheric pollutants is mentioned. The problem of packing objects for travel is discussed. A system of float packing, whereby one box is suspended by springs within another, is proposed. Humidity change during travel is also mentioned. There is a brief section about mobile exhibitions. The author predicts that museums in the future will continue to engage in current conservation activities, that the conservation field will become more specialized, and that there will be the development of the exhibition conservator. -- AATA
