The Svendborg project, started in 1972, had the following aims: to determine the town's topographical development in the Middle Ages, to describe life in a medieval Danish town on the basis of the surviving material evidence, and to test a series of new scientific techniques in archaeology and natural history, with a view to supplementing by such means the knowledge of cultural history, based hitherto on sporadic written sources and the traditional archaeological methods.
