Since the early Middle Ages different ores-especially those of gold, tin, iron, lead, and silver-were mined in the Fichtelgebirge, the northeastern corner of Bavaria. The small deposits were soon exhausted, but until the present there were repeated efforts to start mining again. -- AATA
