This article illustrates the unique role played by measured drawings and the field work leading up to them in the preservation of engineering works. It includes a brief section outlining the process and some of the techniques of field measurement, and ends with a discussion of the relationship to other elements of recording: photography, photogrammetry, written and oral histories.
