Painted and polychrome metal surfaces are often exposed to the atmosphere where physical and chemical alteration of the surface can take place almost immediately. The author gives examples of possible treatment on two objects in the possession of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, i.e., the plateau from the Sèvres Egyptian Centre Piece and the sculpture of the Buddhist goddess, Tara, from Nepal.
