Abstract
Oxalic acid, a compound produced during fossil fuel combustion, is widely distributed in polluted atmospheres. A possible anthropogenic origin for oxalic acid, derived from urban and industrial activities, is proposed to explain the presence of calcium oxalate films on the marbles and limestone of monuments. Other possible origins of calcium oxalate films are discussed.
