Abstract
A treatment was carried out which attempts to act simultaneously as a deacidification agent and fungistat for paper. The chemical used was calcium propionate, a nontoxic compound already known for its ability to inhibit the development of microorganisms. Experiments were conducted in which the degree of whiteness, pH, degree of polymerization, and infrared spectroscopic analysis were carried out on test samples of Whatman paper, oxidized with hypochlorite, treated with propionate and untreated, before and after accelerated aging at 80°C and a relative humidity of 76%. This first investigation shows that calcium propionate is a good cellulose deacidifier and stabilizer, especially when cellulose is treated with sodium hypochlorite.
