Abstract
Because macro and microscopic examination rarely yield sufficient information to reconstruct methods of fabrication in archeological ceramics, other methods of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) are needed. NDE methods commonly used in modern ceramics that tried and found unsuccessful in this study. These are identified. Various x-ray imaging technologies were more successfully applied to three samples, one modern and two archaeological ceramics in order to obtain fabrication information. The samples were imaged using various x-ray image receivers: electrostatic receivers (xeroradiography), high-resolution industrial x-ray film, photostimulable phosphors, and computer aided tomography (Micro-CT scanner). Procedures used with these x-ray imagining technologies are described and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are outlined.
