Abstract
This article reviews some basic concepts and considerations in matting and hinging procedures commonly used in fine print drawing and photography collections. Begins with a general discussion of matting items in print, drawing and photographic collections, and the choice of matboard for example the use of a natural board, instead of the more generally employed perment durable board. A discussion of hinges. Follows the choice of hinge paper and adhesives is considered with a table listing materials commonly used for hinging together with critical comments on their value and utility. Photographs illustrate the preparation and application of hinges. A recipe is given for starch paste. Together with materials and their suppliers with u.s. Addresses. Reading list.
