A description of the nature and deterioration processes. Of osseous material (non-fossilised bone tissue, teeth, ivory, antler and horn) is given. Materials used for repairs are mentionned; polyvinyl acetate being the preferred adhesive. The grade chosen depends on the nature and condition of the particular sample under treatment. Tables provides lists of unsuitable solvents and adhesives and the general effects of different soil conditions on osseous material and consequent handling recommendations. Practical handling of osseous materials, its cleaning and mending, packing and housing are considered. Proper packaging is suggested as a method for attenuating excessive fluctuations in relative humidity. References, photographs.
