Abstract
The intent of this thesis is to review contemporary theories regarding the origins of copper and bronze working in Europe and the Near East and to suggest how nineteenth century ideas regarding Mediterranean culture and modern political history have combined to direct attention away from Sardinia as an early source for metals and technology. These attitudes have resulted in the island being relegated to minor status in the early history of metallurgy despite significant evidence attesting to the contrary.
