This paper is a transcript of a speech given by Mr. Baynes- Cope regarding superstition and science in the conservation of paper. The following superstitions are discussed and explained: 1) That alum is an effective microbicide for flour paste; 2) That cedarwood oil is an effective microbicide and was used as such by the ancients; 3) That an anti-chlor must always be used after bleaching; 4) That foxing is dependent on the presence of iron; 5) That the presence of iron in leather is a major cause of the attack of atmospheric sulphur dioxide on bookbindings; and, 6) That there is a lower limit for the desirable temperature range in which books may be stored.
