Abstract
When a UV curable material is polymerized, many properties such as tensile strength, abrasion resistance, surface slip, etc., reach higher values at higher levels of irradiation corresponding to higher degrees of crosslinking. In a production situation, therefore, it would be desirable to know if this optimum degree of cure were being achieved. This is particularly so since UV lamp systems can lose much of their effectiveness with time without this being obvious to the user. Three methods of measuring cure in the laboratory have been studied; Pulsed NMR, IR absorption, and Dielectric Spectroscopy (DS). The last two methods give relative cure and can only be used for absolute determination of cure when calibrated against a method which itself yields an absolute determination. NMR is such a method when used in conjunction with a model discussed below. IR and DS, however, can better be adapted to on line measurements.
