Abstract
A Roman scabbard excavated in 1897 but since then untreated, was recently found to be seriously deteriorated. It was examined and treated by the author in the conservation department of the City Museum, Bristol. X-radiographs of the corroded scabbard revealed a fine inlay and some rivets as well as cracks. The scabbard was reinforced with Perspex and fibre-glass before the corrosion was removed by abrasion. A spectrographic examination showed the inlay to be bronze with some gold present. The scabbard was finally washed, dried, reburnished and varnished. -- AATA
