Archaeological interpretations of the American Bottom are aided by geomorphological research. A description of the landscape evolution is offered for the area. Here, the geomorphologic description is fundamentally focused on the landform characteristics that existed during the time of prehistoric cultural occupation. However, a discussion of the spatial-temporal fluvial landform changes is also included to implement a holistic understanding of prehistoric cultural relationships for much of the central portion of the American Bottom. Given supplemental geomorphic data from this site and adjacent areas, significant clarification of theoretical causative factors for morphology differences has been achieved.
