Using her experience as Director of the Municipal Archives of Amsterdam, the author defines the role of a restorer at such an institution. (The author indicates that the title of conservator might be more applicable, but the word is somewhat preempted by its Dutch counterpart.) Municipal archives in the Netherlands keep not only archival material but also large collections of graphic and pictorial documents (prints, drawings, maps, posters, photographs, etc.) The role of the conservator, therefore, is to ensure the material care of these objects, including proper climate, lighting, handling, and transportation when loans or exhibitions take place. Methods and policies of restoration practice are also examined from a general point of view, and the cooperation between historian and technician is stressed.
