Abstract
Suspensions of nine bacteria of various sizes and flagellation were filtered through sapwood samples of <i>Picea abies</i> and <i>Pinus nigra</i>. Four bacteria (mainly <i>Pseudomonas</i> species with polar flagella) could pass through some samples of limited length. It is concluded that bacteria are unlikely to be transported over long distances in the capillary water of conifers. -- AATA
